We send as many of our staff as possible (not just the boss) to the destinations we feature. We sleep in the hotels, we explore the regions, we know the locals and, best of all, we experience the activities.

Please click on the relevant tabs to view frequently asked questions. If your question is not listed then please do not hesitate to e-mail us or give us a call on 01670 789 101 and we will be happy to help you.

How do I choose the right destination?

It is a very difficult decision to make and it takes time to make up your mind. One of the best ways to begin is by completing our wish list as it will make you think about what the most important elements of your wedding are going to be. You can also contact us at any time and we will be more than happy to talk, in depth, about each place and what makes it special and unique.

How cold will it be?

It will come as no surprise that the further north you go, the colder it will get. In some places the temperature at night regularly falls below -30 degrees but in our experience even temperatures as low as this produce a very different type of cold to that experienced in the UK. The air is generally much dryer in Scandinavia and the wind chill factors are less of an issue.

The majority of our trips include full winter clothing during the activities. This will include thermo-overalls, thick socks, mittens, boots and warm hat as well as helmets when appropriate.

What about the wedding paperwork?

This is a necessary part of getting married abroad and the paperwork varies depending on which country you choose. Usually the process needs to be started 12 weeks prior to getting married.  We will supply you with a checklist of what needs to be done and what documentation you will need to complete. All you need to do is add it to your plan of things to do in the run up to the wedding.

NB. The Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage is only valid for up to 4 months - therefore you must get married within 4 months of receiving this certificate.

Is there a best time to travel?

There is rarely a bad time to get married or go on your honeymoon but from our experience, there are certain times to travel which may well enhance your enjoyment.

If you have the flexibility then we recommend travelling to Scandinavia in March and early April. In northerly lying countries you will still get deep, deep snow but the daylight hours are longer and the temperatures higher.

It is no coincidence that the Finns and the Swedes tend to holiday in their own countries during March and April.
Christmas, New Year, February half term and Easter are very popular with families as their holidays are restricted to school term times. You may wish to avoid these periods if you prefer your holidays to be "child-free". Sometimes places such as Lainio Snow Village highly recommend marrying outside of these busier periods so that you can experience a more intimate ceremony and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

Can I choose my own wedding date?

Yes. You will be able to choose what day you would like to get married, prior to confirming your booking with us, subject to availability. If you have a particular date in mind we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

How far in advance do I need to book my wedding?

You will need to book at least 10 weeks prior to your wedding date to ensure that you have time to complete all of the necessary documentation and send it over to the magistrates in Finland.

How much daylight will there be?

In parts of Lapland the sun disappears over the horizon in late December and doesn't reappear until early January. Don't worry! This does not mean that you will be immersed in darkness throughout your holiday.

The thick covering of snow reflects every little bit of available light creating what many in Lapland call "blue time". "Blue time" extends both the dawn and twilight hours so there will always be sufficient daylight to ensure that you can fully enjoy the activities (except during night time safaris of course!).

How long does a civil ceremony last?

A civil ceremony usually lasts around 10-15 minutes. If you would like a longer ceremony you do have the option to say your own vows.

What should I wear on my wedding day?

What you choose to wear on your wedding day is very much up to you. Brides can choose a traditional wedding dress combined with petticoats under your gown and/or a warm fax-fur jacket or shawl. Some wedding dresses come with matching jackets which would be perfect for your big day! The grooms outfit should also consist of many layers, ensuring materials such as wool are worn to keep warm throughout the day.

In terms of shoes you can wear anything you want as it is your special day, please just make sure that you will be able to walk on the snow in them and that they will keep your feet warm and dry during the day. Some brides choose snow boots others choose something more in keeping with Lappish traditions – boots made of reindeer skins which can be purchased when you are there.

If you are getting married in an Ice Chapel the temperatue will remain at a constant -5oc. If you are marrying at an ice altar outdoors please bear in mind that the temperature could be as cold as -35oc and you will definitely  need a warm hat, gloves, warm coats and appropriate footwear.

How do I transport my wedding dress?

The best way to ensure a wedding dress arrives safely is to check it in as hand baggage. We can contact the airline and ask to reserve a space in a hanging closet such as the ones in first class cabins or those used by the cabin crew. Alternatively, pack the dress carefully in acid-free tissue paper and place in a small case that complies with hand baggage regulations for the particular airline and that will fit into an overhead locker. You can get specialist wedding boxes to transport your dress safely and then to remove any creases when you arrive, hang your dress up in a steamy bathroom.

What about travel and wedding insurance?

Insurance is an important part of any booking. We recommend everyone who books with us has travel insurance which includes cover for all activities featured as part of your trip.
If you would like to obtain cover for your trip please feel free to contact specialist Insurance Brokers, Campbell Irvine for a quote using one of the following steps.

1) Click here to apply for travel insurance.
2) Tel: 0844 826 2722
3) Email: info@campbellirvine.com

Any activity when booked through Winter Weddings is automatically insured (once payment has been made to Campbell Irvine for your trip cover) without the need to pay any additional premium, other than tandem paragliding (please ask for details). If you are planning to arrange any additional activities booked independently of The Winter Wedding Company, please check with Campbell Irvine to confirm cover.
We strongly recommend that you take out additional insurance to cover the costs of your wedding as a separate entity.
Do we need to buy specialist equipment?

No. On the vast majority of our winter holidays you will be provided with thermal overalls, gloves, boots and socks. On the few holidays where this equipment is not provided from start to finish you will always be properly kitted out during the activities.

We recommend a few items which will enhance the clothing provided in your destination. Before you travel we will send you a dossier listing these items but in our opinion there are a few simple rules which will keep you comfortably warm. In terms of clothing we recommend thin woollen layers rather than cotton which easily gets wet. Always keep your head, hands and feet well insulated. These are the areas where most heat is lost.

How do I go about booking?

To make a booking please just get in touch with us.

We will just need to get a few details from you and then will require the following deposit payment(s):

Holiday Package - £400 per person
Wedding Package – £500 (in total, not per person)

We recommend that deposits are paid by debit card as there would be a surcharge of 2% when paying by credit card.
