Nellim is a small village located in northern Lapland just 10kms from the Russian border. For a genuinely Lappish experience there are few places to compare as this is where three different cultures come together, the Inari Saami, the Koltta Sami and the Finns themselves. It is the definitely a favourite for those wishing to maximise their chances of having a northern lights wedding!

The ceremony
When you cross the frozen lake and walk through the snow covered forest, it is hard to believe that such a beautiful church is situated in such a remote location.

This church is Russian orthodox and therefore is only available for blessings. However, you can get married just outside the church at an ice altar.

Alternatively, you can get married at an ice altar on the beautiful frozen lake. You may choose to get married through the day or in the evening where we will light the venue with candles and lanterns.

Transport to and from the ceremony
Travel in style on a husky or reindeer pulled sleigh.

The celebration
Return to a traditional wooden kota in the grounds of the hotel for a wedding feast cooked on an open fire. This cosy and lappish style venue provides a truly romantic atmosphere perfect for your winter wedding.

If you are looking for a more intimate celebration, we can arrange a fire and reindeer skins on the frozen lake, where you can sit and drink berry juice (or something a little stronger) while you admire the aurora and/or fireworks.

Wedding night
You can enjoy an evening in one of the apartments in a separate building to the hotel or you will be taken by husky pulled sled to a remote cabin where you will spend your wedding night beside a frozen lake. The wilderness cabin is basic but very romantic - perfect if you really want to escape reality.

Nellim Wilderness Hotel & Apartments
Built in traditional Finnish style, this one-storey hotel was formerly the village school.  It offers cosy, clean and very comfortable accommodation in just 18 double and three single en-suite bedrooms.  There are also a few larger bedrooms which are suitable for families.  These rooms are all housed in the main building which is the hub of the hotel's activity.

To be honest staying at the hotel is more like being part of the family than enduring a soujourn in some characterless and standardised chain hotel.  After dinner in the restaurant, why not get a drink from the bar and join the rest of the family watching the unfathomable Finnish TV?

Seriously, nightlife is not high on the agenda here so you may want to take a few books or games as additional entertainment.  However, after exploring the amazing Lapland vistas, a drink and sheer relaxation are more likely to be the preferred option.  Either that or a stroll down to the lake to peer skywards.

The Facilities
All the food is home-cooked and, as far as possible in this far-flung corner, locally sourced and produced. Suppliers include local reindeer herders and fishermen. Generally speakng the dishes will be pretty much what the family would eat on a daily basis. Good, wholesome and nutritious.

There are two saunas and a well-stocked bar but make sure you keep your coat on the pegs near the main entrance. That way you can grab it quickly for the dash outside when the Aurora Borealis starts dancing across the night sky.

As you will doubtless have gathered, Hotel Nellim is not a large establishment so availability is often limited.

in our opinion...

Stay in a small village, located in Northern Lapland only 10 kms from the Russian Border, which offers a genuine Lappish experience. It is the most northerly destination that we offer and provides a great chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

The chapel here is simply beautiful and truly unique. I was blown away when I first laid eyes on it, there really is nothing like it elsewhere in Lapland. This combined with the nature and wildness of the destination makes it a truly remarkable place. And to top it off - Jouko and Mari are fantastic hosts and welcome you as if you are part of the family.
